A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify what caused this accident,” stated the country's president.
The leader confirmed that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The official noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose term concluded the previous year. This project was a hallmark of his administration's economic goals for the southern region.
Another ambitious train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The construction of both train projects was managed by the armed forces, marking a notable growth of its responsibilities in public works. They were completed at an rapid speed, beating forecasts to be partially opened before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously fueled significant questions over operational security.
- Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This involves an previous crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a major opposition party called for an prompt halt in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This stoppage was requested pending a comprehensive technical review. The party declared that the situation "demands prompt explanations."
In response, the head of state asserted that the train had been operating in complete adherence to all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and running of these national undertakings.
