Space Traveler Shares Depression In the Wake of Deluge of Harassment After Historic Trip

A pioneering space traveler has opened up regarding her battle with depression after facing a relentless barrage of criticism in the wake of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.

Amanda Nguyen – recognized as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the short-duration mission earlier this year, which also included well-known figures.

The mission was heavily criticized by some, who cited its expense and carbon footprint.

Reflecting on the ordeal, the astronaut, who became the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the negative reaction buried her dreams under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” she recounted in a social media post, recalling a supportive conversation from a fellow crew member in the aftermath of the landing.

She characterized the press attention and digital reaction as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she confessed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”

Overshadowed by Sexism

Ms. Nguyen, who has dedicated her work to female health science and conducted tests during the flight, said every professional achievement – including her studies and extensive preparation to the personal milestone of her background – was overshadowed under the deluge of gendered attacks.

She is most acclaimed for her tireless campaigning fighting for justice for survivors of assault.

Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was put on hold after being assaulted during her time as a student, leading to a protracted legal battle.

A Path to Recovery

In the time since achieving her goal, she reports that the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she thanked the supporters whose kindness were her lifeline. “You were my salvation,” she affirmed.

She concluded that despite the negativity, important benefits had emerged from the mission, such as spotlight on her women's health research and chances to influence leaders.

Flight Details

The computer-piloted spacecraft launched from its launch site in April, carrying the all-female team on a 11-minute journey that passed the internationally recognized boundary of space.

The diverse crew also included accomplished professionals from multiple disciplines.

The venture behind the mission is a private space firm established by a well-known tech mogul.
