Survivor shares story to inspire others
The survivor chose to waive privacy to motivate additional victims to report their experiences

As a member on a jury panel in 2018, the survivor understood he must chase legal recourse for himself after being raped in the year 2004.

Hearing the witnesses, I could distinctly imagine myself in the identical scenario,” he explained after waiving his right to anonymity.

After the trial, the presently 39-year-old from Watton, Norfolk decided to approach the police once more to disclose his perpetrator.

In late February 2024, two decades following the assault, the convicted individual from Oulton Broad, Suffolk was handed 8 years in prison after being found guilty of dual offenses of violation and an additional count of penetrative assault.

At the time, Dan had been 17 when he came across 21-year-old the assailant in the city of Norwich in the year 2004, and their meeting evolved into his first relationship.

On a Saturday evening in May that year, the couple had been at a barbecue when the perpetrator got drunk and requested Dan to take him back.

At about midnight, the perpetrator instructed Dan to stop the car on a secluded street near the medical facility in the Norfolk area.

Gilder attacked Dan and resulted in severe physical damage which resulted in him being hospitalized three times that time period.

Traumatized, Dan was found a way to transport the assailant back before heading to his mother’s house.

“I stayed lying down for an extended period thinking, ‘what took place? what had just gone on?’,” he explained.

In September that year, Dan approached the law enforcement and detailed the incident.

The survivor stated he had provided a statement at the time, but it was not advanced any further because he was “in poor health at that time”.

His family members and other family members had no idea he was gay, he added.

“Times were unlike at that time,” he commented.

Presently, the survivor serves as a managerial professional for the public administration, but he previously worked in a correctional facility, where he said he would often suppress emotions when prisoners discussed their own trauma.

He added he was attacked on the job, which also led to traumatic recollections.

“Subsequently, during jury duty. Recollections of the assault again. It was a non-stop cycle that had to end,” he remarked.

The witnesses who helped secure a conviction in the 2018 hearing in which he was a panel member were “inspirational”, according to Dan.

“It was just remarkable to see them going up and sharing their accounts and dealing with the challenging inquiries being directed at them,” he said.

“I was working at the airport as an immigration officer at this time, and I had to take several weeks away due to illness.

“It was then that I again disclosed [the attack] to the police and I petitioned to take it forward for me, which they said they could do,” he added.

Explicit Details

Law enforcement officers from the authorities were tasked with Dan’s case in the year 2018, and it proceeded to a formal accusation and court case at the crown court in November of 2023.

Through his court submission, Dan described how he had been identified with severe trauma (PTSD) linked to the rape.

“I endured, and continue to have, recurring contemplations of suicide,” he wrote.

A quarter of female adults and approximately 6% of adult men have been the victims of sexual assault, or unsuccessful attacks, according to the official statistics.

Research conducted found that 44% of a group of 180 who were confronted with graphic evidence in trials reported symptoms consistent with PTSD.

“Historic incidents, mental health difficulties and instant stress reactions during a court case can intensify emotional and stress reactions,” the study authors explained.

Back in 2004, The survivor’s parent confronted the perpetrator when he appeared to check on her son in the hospital after Dan had told her what had happened.

“There was a rage like a fire burning internally. I was extremely upset,” she recalled.

Gilder left and it was the last time she laid eyes on him.

When speaking to her son, she commented: “I experienced great pride of you for sticking by what you had faith in and pursuing it to the end. It was your justice. You’d strived intensely.

“Psychologically, it really taken a toll on you and we could see how you faced challenges.”

The survivor explained his existing position as an fire service volunteer for firefighting services had assisted in the recovery journey.

“Serving the public has offered me something to concentrate on and find purpose in,” he expressed.

Dan said he now took pleasure in his three dogs, biking and exploring new places.

Starting in May he has started to make videos about his journey and shares them on digital networks, where he now has a following of 12,000 on TikTok.

“It has assisted a many individuals. The number of private messages I’ve had to say it’s helped others is immense,” he said. “{I’ve got to do
